Open Source is Cool

Yesterday was Christmas.

This year I think we were particularly happy because it has barely stopped raining for the last few days. Considering that we are in an endless drought, our water storage is now below 40% and we have had bush fires raging for 25 days, this is a significant event.

Anyway, that wasn’t what I wanted to say.

After the usual family stuff in the morning, I was free to do my thing, so I decided to work on a little piece of software that will probably become my masters thesis.

So, Christmas evening I stumble across a bug in PHP and file this report. This morning I get up thinking I would be spending most of today up to my elbows in PHP internals trying to fix it but noo, a christmas-coder-elf by the name of Dimitry already fixed it while I was asleep.

Yep, on Christmas day. I must email him a thankyou.

And therein lies the difference between coding for fun and coding for profit.

Freak Weather

I am writing against the drudgery of my usual bi-monthly apish techno-robo drivel.

In case you didn’t notice, Victoria is burning. Yep, 1/3 has been on fire for the last twenty-something days, only to be partially extinguished yesterday evening by a freak downpour of rain.

Funnily enough, the family holiday houses are at opposite edges of the fire.

And they predict its going to snow on Christmas day in the alps. Yep, my home state is burning and its going to snow in the middle of summer.

uberobo

Just stumbled across this while fixing some stuff at work, the Top 10 robots of 2006 has just been announced.

My cat I grew up with died last year and being at home hasn't been the same since. I've been kinda thinking about getting a new one but given that I intend to study abroad in 2008 I figured it would be unfair.

Funilly enough, this years top contestant is Paro (which is now in its 7th revision) is probably the closest thing yet to a robotic pet. Best of all, unlike a cat Paro can travel freely through customs without some ridiculous 3 month quarrantine period.

Hmm I wonder what my old cat would think about being replaced by a robot.
